Kylian Mbappe received the title of France's player of the year at a awards event in Paris on Monday ahead of the upcoming Paris Olympics, marking the culmination of his seven-season tenure with Paris Saint-Germain.

The 25-year-old, whose participation remains unclear at Paris 2024, was awarded the title of the top player in Ligue 1 at the UNFP (French players' union) Trophies gala for the fifth consecutive time. This recognition comes following a season during which he netted 44 goals across all competitions for PSG.

Last week, the captain of the French national team confirmed his departure from PSG at the conclusion of the season, as his contract reaches its end. It is widely anticipated that his next destination will be Real Madrid.

"It is a page that is turning, a chapter of my life that is going to close," Mbappe said. "Ligue 1 will always have an important place in my life. It is the only league I have known in my career up to now.

"I have always tried to be an honourable representative of this league," he added. "I will miss it for sure. It is a part of my life that is coming to an end. What is coming next is very exciting but that is something else."

In his final home appearance for PSG on Sunday, Mbappe found the net as the champions suffered an unexpected 3-1 loss to Toulouse, following on from their Champions League omission at the hands of Borussia Dortmund. His goal against Toulouse, increased his tally to 27 for the season in Ligue 1, surpassing Lille's Canadian striker Jonathan David by eight goals.

Despite the imminent end of the season, PSG still has two more Ligue 1 matches scheduled for this week before they face Lyon in the French Cup final on 25 May. Mbappe clinched the award, voted for by his peers and presented by Marie-Jose Perec, the former French Olympic champion in the 200m and 400m events.

His PSG teammate Ousmane Dembele, along with Pierre Lees-Melou from Brest, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Marseille, and Edon Zhegrova from Lille, were among the other nominees.

PSG's dominance in the domestic scene was highlighted in other categories, with teenage midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery named the Young Player of the Season and Gianluigi Donnarumma receiving the accolade for the Best Goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Eric Roy from Brest was honored as the Coach of the Year for guiding the modest Brittany club to European qualification for the first time in their history.
